What Are You Holding

What Are You Holding?

It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him. Deuteronomy 13:4 (NIV)

The Online Dictionary defines hold as ‘grasp, carry, support with one’s arms or hands’. The definition gives rise to the question: what are you holding on to?

Too many times it seems as though we hold on to the wrong things. We hold on to our possessions, our children, our dreams, our loved ones … the list is endless.

Books and movies convince us that we have to hold on to those things if we want them. But what does the Bible teach? Can we hold on to the world and hold on to God at the same time?

The answer is a resounding no.

We cannot serve two masters. We either choose to hold on the things we think will make us happy or, we choose to hold on to Christ. We can’t do both.

Here’s another viewpoint: sometimes we can hold on to things that God would want us to release.

“What on earth is she talking about?” you’re probably wondering.

Let me explain. Are you holding on to things from your past that hurt you or made you feel ‘less than’?

Are you holding on to someone because you love them?

Are you holding on to the gifts that God has given you?

Are you holding on to something that God wants you to let go of?

What are you waiting for? When are you going to release that which is not yours to keep?

Let’s decide today to choose to hold on to the right thing.
