We Are What We Read

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:1-2 NKJV
My mother tells a story of my circa two year old self holding an upside down copy of Silas Marner. At various times I would start laughing hilariously. When asked what was so funny, my response was, “Me a wead man, me a wead.” (I’m reading, I’m reading).
Since that time I have devoured thousands … maybe even millions of books and this is what I’ve realized: what we read affect the way we see things and the way we behave.
This is why the Bible cautions Christians to guard their hearts. ‘Why does it matter what we read or what we watch?’ You may think. The truth? What we read has a lot to do with how we relate to things.
Are you discouraged? Read materials that are uplifting and motivating. Want to learn something new? Research the topic and read everything you can about it. Want to learn more about God and what he expects? Read his holy book.
The words we read become a backdrop to our lives. What are you reading today?
