Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation? (Hebrews 1:14 ESV)
When we were children, many of us may have sung “I am in the Lord’s army”. When we were younger, it was just a song that allowed us to march around and pretend we were soldiers (or was that just me?). As adults, being a part of God’s army is a decision we have to make. We live in a world where people like to claim that they’re neutral, but in this battle, there are only two choices: God or the devil.
Joshua and the Israelites stood on the verge of capturing the Promised Land. At that point in their history, they were a part of the Lord’s army. Because they were, they didn’t have to fight battles by themselves.
Before the Israelites could enter the Promised Land, they had a war on their hand. There were a lot of battles in their future as they were surrounded by enemies. In Joshua 5:13, we read these words,
And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand (NKJV).
Can imagine how Joshua felt when he saw this unknown man standing with his sword drawn? Was this Man an enemy? Did he have a nefarious purpose for being in the Israelite camp? Would he be able to defeat him in one-on-one combat?
Let me just take a moment to say how brave Joshua was to have gone up to this man and confronted him. I would have been quaking in my sandals but, I digress. I love what happened next,
So He said, “No, but as Commander of the army of the LORD I have now come” (Joshua 5:14 NKJV).
Isn’t that amazing? An angel had been sent from heaven to lead the charge into the Promised Land. When you are in the Lord’s army, God sends reinforcements to help you fight the battles.
Being a part of God’s army also gives you the courage to face your adversaries boldly. Joshua and the children of Israel didn’t have to face their enemies in their own strength or using their own resources, they had the Lord of Hosts to help them.
My friend, you and I may not have to fight physical battles today but we are caught in a fight for our souls. The enemy of our souls wants to defeat us. He wants us powerless so he can accuse us before God. Spiritual warfare is real and every person on earth is engaged in this battle whether they choose to admit it or not. The enemy is prowling about trying to destroy us (1 Peter 5:8). We have to remain in the Lord’s army. We have to remain faithful to God and He will remain faithful to us.
Yahweh Tsebaoth, You are awesome and worthy to be praised. You speak and the whole universe obeys. Your power and might are unimaginable and we praise You because of who You are.
Lord, we choose today to be a part of your army. We know You are the only God worth being served and so we submit our lives into Your hands. We don’t want to try to fight our battles in our own strength any more, we turn them over to You. Send reinforcements, Lord, and grant us victory over our enemies. In Jesus’s name we pray, Amen.
