"Give thanks" against a fall colour background

God is good and every good and perfect gift comes from Him. It shouldn’t surprise you therefore that the Bible has tons of Bible verses about giving thanks.

As you go through your days, thanksgiving Bible verses are a great addition to your Thanksgiving celebration. They are also a great addition to your daily worship experience.

What is a Good Bible Verse for Thanksgiving?

During the Thanksgiving holiday, our focus usually turns to ways we can give thanks to God. At that of the year, we are more aware of why we need to be thankful.

If you had to choose a single Thanksgiving Bible verse to focus on for the entire Thanksgiving period, and in fact for every day of Your life, it should be this one,

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 ESV

This verse is a reminder that we need to practice thanksgiving to God even when life doesn’t turn out how we had hoped. We give thanks to God even when He doesn’t answer our prayers the way we hoped He would.

Examples of thanksgiving in the Bible

How do you give thanksgiving to God? What does the Bible say about Thanksgiving to God? There are many stories and examples of how to give thanks in the Bible. One of my favorites is Hannah’s. You can read the full account including Hannah’s prayer in 1 Samuel 1-2.

Hannah was the beloved wife of Elkanah but she couldn’t have children. In a society that praised women for the fruitfulness of their wombs, life must have been very hard for her. Especially when her husband’s second wife Penninah started having lots of babies.

The Bible tells us that Penninah made Hannah’s life miserable. So much so that she went to the Temple and poured out her heart, including her desire for a child to the Lord.

When God blessed her with a child, Hannah was effusive in her praise.

“My heart rejoices in the LORD;
My horn is exalted in the LORD.
I smile at my enemies,
Because I rejoice in Your salvation.
No one is holy like the LORD,
For there is none besides You,
Nor is there any rock like our God.” 1 Samuel 2:1-2 NKJV

Hannah’s thanksgiving reminds us that out of the abundance of our heart, the mouth speaks (Luke 6:45). Her heart was filled to the brim with thanksgiving for what God had done and it spilled out of her mouth as praise.
