Summer Bucket List

Summer Bucket List

Summer is officially here. We say hello to longer days and hot, mosquito filled nights. We also say hello to long days with children in the house. After spending months cooped up in the classroom (or hours tied to a curriculum if they’re home-schooled) they crave freedom. They dream of long days and nights spent doing nothing but laying in bed and using a screen.

I remember summers in Jamaica when I was younger: it was days at the beach, children outside flying kites and playing dandy-shandy. Not to mention trips to the country as we got the chance to spend time with grandparents and the rest of the extended family.

Summer was that lovely time to enjoy being outdoors or at least in my case, to have my nose buried in a book to my heart’s content. Conversely, I cannot get my son outside if I used a crowbar and his nose is always buried in a screen of some sort.

To his dismay, I have dubbed this ‘The Summer of Going Outdoors’. There’s a growing list of things I have planned for him to do outside:

  • Ride a bicycle
  • Play hopscotch
  • Play football
  • Jump rope
  • Hide and Seek
  • Play with toys (outdoors)
  • Read outdoors
  • Fly paper planes
  • Sky gaze
  • Scavenger hunt
  • Go to the beach

I’ve also compiled a list of things that he can do which also will help him fine-tune skills that he will use in school:

  • Complete a summer reading list
  • Listen to audiobooks
  • Review every book read
  • Play Bingo
  • Play dominoes
  • Write stories
  • Play charades
  • Story night
  • Play board games
