Sex, Purity, and the Longings of a Girl’s Heart Review
For the modern Christian woman living in today’s sexually charged society, embracing God’s design for sex and purity can often feel like an impossible pursuit. As the culture seeks to normalize things such as pornography, erotica, and casual sex, both single and married women of all ages feel immense pressure to conform. With alluring temptations constantly inviting them to join in, they might even begin to question whether God’s design is truly good. They wrestle with questions like
– What is the purpose of my sexuality?
– What does it mean to pursue purity?
– Are my sexual longings good or bad?
In this encouraging book, Kristen Clark and Bethany Beal share honestly about their own struggles and victories, and invite women on a personal journey to discover and reclaim a biblical vision for their sexuality. Kristen and Bethany help women understand why God’s design for sexuality is good, relevant, and leads to true hope and lasting freedom.

Sex, Purity, and the Longings of a Girl’s Heart is a frank discussion on topics such as lust, pornography, and masturbation. A lot of people think women don’t struggle with these things. But a truer story may be that women don’t talk about their struggles with sex, lust, and masturbation. The authors Beal and Clark talk about their own struggles as well as those of other women to let you know you’re not alone.
If the book had ended there it would have been a good read. But it doesn’t. It takes us on a journey into the mind of God to remind (or teach) us what purity is all about. It’s not about saving yourself for marriage because it’s the right thing to do or because your church demands it…it’s about pursuing a relationship with Christ.
In a world that touts sexual independence, women—and men—are taught that it’s okay to do what they want with their bodies. We can dress, and give ourselves sexually to anyone we choose. But is that really God’s ideal? Not according to Beal and Clark. We were made for yada: the deep, intimate knowledge of someone. It’s someone who knows your heart, mind, and soul and still loves you.
This intimacy begins with God and spills outwards to our relationships. Sex, Purity, and the Longings of a Girl’s Heart reminds us that sin changed the way men and women relate to each other. In God’s perfect world sex was part of the covenant of marriage and was an intrinsic part of communicating their commitment to each other. Today, sexual brokenness prevails and sex has become just another tool that can be used by the enemy.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. Regardless of your past experiences or the role sex has played in your life to this point, you can renew your covenant with God.
Know God—Beal and Clark established that the further we drift from God the more we indulge in sexual sin. The answer, therefore, is to spend time working on our relationship with our Heavenly Father. He will fulfill our desires for intimacy.
Know yourself—Readers are encouraged to discover the true purpose for which sex was designed. In order to do that we’ll have to examine the reasons for indulging in fantasies, erotica, masturbation or porn. As we uncover the desires of our heart we get a clearer picture of how much we are in need of redemption.
Run your race—As we read the authors struggles with their own sexuality, we are given the courage to own up to our sexual brokenness and seek healing. As we turn to Christ for our sexual identity, we embrace the role He created for us.
Favorite Quotes from Sex, Purity, and the Longings of a Girl’s Heart
If we, as women, want to experience God’s good and intended design for our sexuality, we need His help. We need His rescuing we can’t climb out of this mess on our own. We need Him to redeem us from our brokenness.
As strong as our sexual desires may be at times, we have the power of Christ living within us to empower us to respond righteously. Our sexual identity does not have to be determined by our sinful desires or temptations.
Instead of looking to a mere human to satisfy the deepest longings of your heart, choose to build an intimate relationship with your Savior. Choose to seek Him with all your heart. You were made for intimacy. You were made for yada.
Regardless of how much porn you consume, it will never, ever fully satisfy you. It will only leave you empty and always longing for more. It will slowly corrode your desires. It will destroy your view of sex. It will eventually poison your real-life romantic relationships. It will hinder you from having a thriving relationship with God.
