Experience Peace Like A River
I love the way the Bible talks about peace. In a world that is often filled with violence and aggravation, it’s good to know that there’s a place where things move at a different pace.
A place where things are calm and move easily.
“Where is this elusive place?” you might ask.
Why in Jesus of course!
In him, we find perfect peace, joy, love, hope and a whole lot of ‘perfects’.
Merriam-Webster defines peace as:
1: a state of tranquility or quiet: such as freedom from civil disturbance or a state of security or order within a community provided for by law or custom
2: freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions
3: harmony in personal relations
Interestingly enough the Bible calls us to live peaceably according to all of the definitions above.
A Call to Live in Peace
Isaiah 26:3 tells us “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”
Have you ever noticed that everything could be falling apart but the minute you start thinking about Jesus you completely forget about all your problems?
There’s something about focusing on Christ that rids our problems of their power.
A Call to Calm Thoughts
Let’s have a show of hands for the persons who have argued quite fluently (and passionately!) in their heads about something that never even happened –
There are so many things in this world that will cause us to lose our peace.
Just picking up the newspaper or watching the news (or a movie) is enough to get your juices flowing…
Or, as we Jamaicans say “cause yuh blood fi boil up” – which is just another way of saying something “makes us very angry”.
Yet Jesus assures us that if we keep our mind on him that we won’t have to worry about keeping our peace anymore.
A Call to Live in Harmony
A search of the New King James version on BibleGateway.com for the word “peace” returned 397 results. That should give us a pretty good idea that peace is something that God really wants for his people.
We are encouraged in Romans 12:18 – “If it be possible, as much as lies in you, live peaceably with all men.”
