Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. But what exactly is delight and why does it please God so much?
MerriamWebster.com defines delight as:
1. A high degree of gratification or pleasure
2. Extreme satisfaction
3. Something that gives great pleasure
This article from BibleStudyTools.com gives biblical insight into the word “delight”.
Why Should Delight Be of Interest to Us?
Okay, I have a confession – when I was a teenager I didn’t understand why Christians looked so sad. I always thought, “If they have Jesus, shouldn’t there be more … joy?”
“Why are the songs that we sing so dull?” I wondered. “Why does everyone seem to just be going through the motions?”
As an adult believer, I finally have the answer: it’s we don’t delight in the Lord.
We don’t have that bellyful of joy that comes from being redeemed.
We don’t have that can’t-hold-back-dance-in-the-street-naked delight that David had.
Maybe it’s because, unlike him, we’re not hiding God’s word in our hearts. We have become content to listen to the gleanings of others.
Don’t get me wrong – there are awesome Bible teachers out there, but the thing is, none of them can find the Bible truth that is there for us.
Studying the Bible is an individual thing – each of us has to know God’s word for ourselves.
We can’t truly delight in God’s word if we don’t read it.
We can’t truly delight in God if we don’t know him.
