Growing in Christ

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil. Hebrews 5:12-14

When I was a teenager I used to wonder why the adults in my church and seemed so depressed and moody. After being Christians for so long, why weren’t they more excited and happy? If Jesus was such a big deal for them why weren’t they happier? Please forgive my teenage cynicism – I was going through a phase.

Now that I’m older I finally get it:

Just because a person has been going to church for twenty years doesn’t mean that they are growing in Christ.

Sometimes we are just not growing. There are a few reasons why this happens. It could be that we have not spent enough time studying our bibles. Or maybe we don’t pray fervently enough.

Sometimes it’s because we don’t exercise our faith.

If we always do what we’ve always done, we will never go to the next level. If we never do what God tells us to do we will never learn the lessons that he wants us to learn.

If we’re not growing with Christ what’s the point? So tell me? Are you growing? What area do you need the most help with?
