As you study the character of God, you can’t help but marvel “Great is His faithfulness”. Humanity has proven many times through history that we are not faithful. We will disobey God. We will do things we know are not right. Thank God He doesn’t treat us as our sins deserve.
The Promise of God’s Faithfulness in Lamentations 3:23-24
In the middle of mourning for a king who served God after so many who didn’t, Jeremiah was able to stop and say these words:
They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!”(Lamentations 3:23-24 NKJV)
The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease,
The simple way of defining ‘lovingkindness’ is tenderness and consideration towards others. Doesn’t that just describe God? I can’t think of another person who puts others before themselves as much as He does.
Let’s put it another way: imagine that all the power in the world was yours. You could do anything you wanted to do to anyone at any time. What would you do?
Would your treatment of others depend on how they treated you? Or would it depend on the mood that you were in at a particular time?
The beauty of God is that He does not treat us as we deserve. He provides for us each and every day. He ensures that our basic needs are met. His provision is not dependent on our obedience or our allegiance. He just provides.
For His compassions never fail.
Jehovah is always concerned about the suffering of His children. He longs for us to call on Him and ask Him to act on our behalf.
He feels pity for us. I believe that His heart hurts when we make wrong choices and have to suffer the consequences. God is a good, good Father, and if we as earthly parents suffer when our children don’t do what’s right, how much more does God who sees and knows the suffering of the entire world?
They are new every morning;
This is the part that always gives me hope: every morning we get a fresh set of mercies from God. Isn’t that wonderful? We can never use up all of God’s grace because every day He refills our cup.
Great is Your faithfulness.
God never changes. If He says He’s going to do something, He does it. He keeps His word even when we don’t keep ours. His word can be trusted because He cannot lie.
Our God is Faithful
God has never made a promise that He has not kept. He is faithful to His words and He is faithful to us–even when we don’t deserve it. Even when we push Him away. Even when we disobey Him and have to be punished. Great is His faithfulness.
Personal Bible Study
The prophet Jeremiah wrote a lot about the faithfulness of God. Even when he had to deliver bad news to the people of Israel, there was an undercurrent of hope.
Read Jeremiah 29, the message of hope is clear even though the children of Israel had been carried away from their inheritance.
Reflect on your life. Do you see where the mercies of God are renewed each day in spite of your actions?
Pray and thank God for being faithful.
