5 Inspiring Bible Verses About Mothers

Bible Verses About Mothers

It is often said that the Bible has an answer for everything. Have you ever wondered what the Bible had to say about mothers?

Let’s examine these Bible verses about mothers to get some knowledge about this important woman in our lives.

What Does the Bible Say About Mothers?

The first time the word “mother” appears in the Bible was in Genesis:

Genesis 2:24 NKJV — Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

After the Lord presented Eve to Adam and explained how she’d been made, he named her “woman.”

When Moses wrote Genesis, he added an explanation for why husbands moved away from their parents to form a new family with their wives.

Bible Verses About Mothers

Mothers have a special place in our hearts. They are the women who cradled us in their bodies until we were born. They nursed us and took care of us.

When you search the Bible for verses about mothers, many of the results also include a reference to fathers.

I believe this is because God’s ideal family included a mother and father working together in one household.

When that happens in the verses referenced in this post, I’ll focus on what the Bible verse says about mothers.

Genesis 3:20

I found it interesting that Eve wasn’t given an individual name until after the Fall.

Genesis 3:20 NKJV — And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.

The word translated as Eve is Chavvâh (pronounced khav-vaw’), which means life-giver.

Exodus 20:12

Of the Ten Commandments, there are six that involve our interpersonal relationships with others.

The first of these commandments had to do with how we treat our parents:

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. Exodus 20:12 ESV

The word translated as honor is kâbad (pronounced kaw-bad’). Kâbad means to make it weighty and can be in a negative or positive sense.

However, since there is a promise attached, we understand that this is in a positive sense.

The Lord wants us to treat our mothers with respect.

Leviticus 20:9

For anyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death; he has cursed his father or his mother; his blood is upon him. Leviticus 20:9 ESV

This verse is connected to the previous. The word translated as cursed is qâlal (pronounced kaw-lal’). Qâlal means to be or make light. Qâlal means bring into contempt, accurse, curse, or despise.

Dishonoring your mother is not acceptable in God’s eyes.

Proverbs 6:20

My son, keep your father’s commandment, and forsake not your mother’s teaching. Proverbs 6:20 ESV

Some of our earliest instructions come from our mothers. As babies, we learn by observation as much as we do by being taught.

The Bible warns us not to turn away from what our mothers taught us. As a caveat, this proverb was written from the perspective of godly parents.

If the teaching of your parents does not align with the Word of God, the Bible teaches that we should obey God and not man (Acts 5:29).

Proverbs 31:28-29

Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” Proverbs 31:28-29 ESV

These verses refer to the Proverbs 31 woman. The woman who takes care of her family and ensures that they’re successful is God’s ideal.

The woman of Proverbs 31 is entrepreneurial, industrious and loving. She is an intricate part of her family and community. She is appreciated and loved by her husband.

I hope these 5 Bible verses about mothers have reminded you how important these women are in God’s plan. If you’re a mother,  keep doing the things you do for your family, even if they don’t seem to appreciate it.

God sees your efforts, and He will reward you in time.
