9 Powerful Bible Verses About Leadership: Lessons from Scripture for Every Believer

Bible Verses for Leaders

Have you ever wondered what makes a leader successful? Like, what are the skills that may make them able to encourage and motivate those they lead?

Maybe you’ve looked at what’s involved in leadership and gave it a hard pass. What if I told you that as Christians, we’re all expected to be leaders?

Don’t believe me? Let’s look at some Bible verses about leadership to see how we can apply them to our lives.

Bible Verses About Leadership

Let me begin by saying that if we read the Bible as a leader appointed by God, seeking advice from the Master, we’ll find leadership nuggets in almost every verse. That being said, I’d like to highlight several verses and the lessons we can learn from them about leadership.

Old Testament Bible Verses About Leadership

The Old Testament stories teach us compelling lessons about how to lead—and how not to. From Adam to Zedekiah, we learn how to be good caretakers of God’s people, but we also learn how God does not want His people treated.

Exodus 18:21 (ESV)

“Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.” — Exodus 18:21 ESV

Moses was one of the greatest leaders among God’s people. He is sometimes called the deliverer of Israel because he was the man God chose to speak to Pharaoh on their behalf.

God used him to administer the plagues that broke Egypt’s will and set the Israelites free. Yet, even Moses had to learn a valuable lesson about leadership: we can’t do it alone.

The burden of listening to the complaints of all the people, dispensing advice, and administering justice became too much for Moses.
At the urging of his father-in-law, Jethro, he was prompted to choose additional leaders from among God’s people. But not just anyone. Jethro outlined four critical qualifications:

  • Able men
  • Men who fear God
  • Trustworthy men
  • Men who hate taking bribes

I encourage you to read the full advice Jethro gave Moses in Exodus 18:13–23. You might recognize the early framework for wise governance—and see how crucial it is to maintain integrity in leadership.

Proverbs 11:14 (ESV)

“Where there is no guidance, a person falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” — Proverbs 11:14 ESV

Leadership requires wise counsel. Leaders aren’t called to make every decision in isolation; they thrive when they seek the wisdom of others grounded in faith and godly discernment.

Proverbs 16:12 (ESV)

“It is an abomination to kings to do evil, for the throne is established by righteousness.” — Proverbs 16:12 ESV

A leader’s foundation must be righteousness. Lasting leadership cannot be built on deceit, corruption, or personal ambition. Only leadership rooted in God’s righteousness will endure.

Jeremiah 23:1 (ESV)

“Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord.” — Jeremiah 23:1 ESV

God holds leaders accountable, especially those who abuse their influence. Leadership is a sacred trust, and God is passionate about protecting His people from harmful leaders.

New Testament Bible Verses About Leadership

The New Testament deepens our understanding of leadership by introducing the radical, servant-hearted leadership modeled by Jesus.

Matthew 20:25–28 (ESV)

“But Jesus called them to him and said, ‘You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.'” — Matthew 20:25–28 ESV

True Christian leadership is not about dominance or power—it’s about service. Jesus redefines greatness, showing us that to lead is to serve sacrificially.

Acts 20:28 (ESV)

“Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.” — Acts 20:28 ESV

Leaders are stewards of God’s people, not owners. We are called to care for the “flock” entrusted to us with humility, diligence, and love.

1 Timothy 4:12 (ESV)

“Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” — 1 Timothy 4:12 ESV

Leadership isn’t reserved for the old or experienced. No matter your age, you are called to lead by example—in your words, actions, and heart.

Philippians 2:3 (ESV)

“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” — Philippians 2:3 ESV

Leadership demands humility. It’s not about status or recognition, but about genuinely putting others’ needs above your own.

Galatians 6:9 (ESV)

“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” — Galatians 6:9 ESV

Leadership can be exhausting. The call to lead well requires perseverance and trust that God sees every unseen act of faithfulness and service.

Biblical Leadership Is Your Calling

Leadership in the Bible isn’t about titles or positions—it’s about influence, service, and obedience to God’s calling. Whether you’re leading your family, a ministry, your workplace, or simply influencing a friend, the biblical principles of leadership remain the same.

God calls every believer to lead in some capacity, with humility, wisdom, righteousness, and unwavering love.

The next time you hesitate to see yourself as a leader, remember:
If you follow Christ, you are already called to lead others toward Him.
